This is the first dialog you see when you start up BackupXpress.

Following a description of each area:
The Groups list box is the focal point of your backup. In it, you list the different groups of your backup project. Each backup group can copy and compress files from one location to another. If you want to back up files from different directories/folders, you must add a new group for each directory that is not already in a subset of another directory already listed. A group is rendered in red if the source directory/folder is invalid. A group is rendered in bold if there are new or revised files in the backup set that have not yet been backed up. After loading or refreshing a project, if there are files in the current backup set that are newer than the last backup date, the checkbox in front of each group is set automatically checked (set for backup). You can also check/uncheck them manually.
By selecting (checking) multiple groups, it is possible to simultaneously set a field to the same value for all groups simultanously. (This does not apply to the 'Sourcepath:' field, however.) New groups can be added by dragging and dropping folders or files from Windows Explorer into the Groups list box or by using the menu item "Edit->Add Group". |
Sourcepath: Enter the path of the directory/folder containing the files you want to be copied. If you use drag & drop, this field is set automatically. You can also use relative path names like '..' or '.'.
Destination: This panel lets you send a backup to an email account, onto DVD or to an ftp server. According to your choice, you see different input fields.
Email: Choose this option, if you want to send the resulting zip file to an email account. Therefore enter a recipient address and subject in the specific fields. You can use "%d" and "%t" as variables for current date and current time. If you leave the subject blank it is automatically set to the filename of the zip file being sent.
FTP: To upload the resulting backup file to a FTP server, please enter all necessary data to connect to the FTP site.
Drive: in order to write on CD or DVD select the available CD writer. Destination: Enter the path where you want to copy the files to. If the 'copy to zip file' option is set, then the files are copied to a zip file with the same name as the last directory in the Dest.Path plus '.zip'. |
Include: Enter filenames, with or without wildcards (*,?), to include in your backup set. Seperate them with semicolons.
Exclude: Enter filenames, with or without wildcards (*,?), to exclude from your backup set. If you enter a filename without extension, and if a directory/folder exists with the same name, then the program will exclude the complete directory with the same name.
Filter button: Opens a dialog box that provides far greater detail and flexibility in editing the 'include' and 'exclude' filters. Click on the filter button to get more information. Specific files: Include or exclude specific files to/from the backup set.. Edit: Click on the 'Edit' button in the pic above to get more information. |
File copy: Copies files to a destination path. Standard compression: Creates a single compressed archive that can only be read by BackupXpress Zip compatible compression: Creates a single compressed archive that can be opened with every zip viewer program.
|
Full backup: Use "Full backup" if you want to copy all your files from the source directory without checking their dates. This mode is usually used as a base of the incremental and differential backup. Incremental backup: Only files that have changes or created since the last incremental backup are included in this backup. This will produce the fastest backup and the smallest archive files. To restore your data, you have to restore every incremental backup archive you have done since the last full backup, starting with the oldest one. Differential backup: Every file that has changed since the last full backup is included in the backup set. To restore this backup you have to restore the last "full backup" first and restore the last "differential backup" afterwards. Full / Incremental backup: Performs an initial full backup and switches to incremental backup afterwards Full /Differential backup: Performs an initial full backup and switches to differential backup afterwards
Verification: You can verify the backup after creation. If you choose the quick verification it only checks if the destination file has the same size then the source file. The "Full"-Verify decompresses the files and checks them byte by byte. Last backup: Date & Time of the last backup of the selected group. A red background in this field indicates that there are files in the group that are newer then the last backup date and that a backup should be performed. Show files button: Show a window that displays all files that are in the backup group. After opening the 'Show Files' list, right clicking any of the directories/folders or individual files listed therein opens a popup menu with various options. Files: Displays the number of files in the backup group. Size: Displays the size of the backup group.
Project description: Gives a short description of the purpose or content of the selected backup project. This text is displayed in the project library. |
